An Afternoon at The Schindler House
Hi friends,
It’s now been a little over two weeks since I’ve been back home in LA and I must admit that at first, I was feeling a bit off. As if I woke up in a parallel universe within the life I left behind before I moved to Paris. It felt odd being home where little has changed despite being away for so long. I felt home but unsettled, living out of a suitcase in my own home. There is still no update for my visa and at this point, there’s nothing I can do but wait.
After a series of visits with friends, I’ve started to feel more at ease with my time back in LA. I’ve tried to focus on what I can control like making plans with friends rather than what I cannot and ultimately, I feel very grateful to be home with the chance to re-discover the City of Stars.
A friend of mine, Claire, who shares her deep love for interior design and flipping vintage furniture posted about her visit to The Schindler House a few months ago on TikTok. I was so intrigued as I thought I had already visited the main architectural museums throughout LA, so I asked her if she’d like to join me for a little visit.
I drove up on a sunny afternoon to West Hollywood (WeHo for the locals) sitting in an hour and a half of LA traffic.
Though the house and museum itself is small, the visit is so worth it. I just couldn’t believe how I had missed this place after driving past Melrose for years coming home from my old job on Sunset. There was also a small sculpture exhibition featuring pieces by Helmut Lang curated by Neville Wakefield and presented with the support of Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello.
Here are a few highlights from my visit:
According to the MAK Center brochure, The Schindler House is “considered among the world’s first modern houses.” With floor to ceiling wood framed windows and an open floor plan flowing from space to space, the house pulls heavily from Japanese design. The house speaks to today’s California minimalism and Scandi-Japanese design that has proven to be so popular and timeless. I love how the softness of the natural light contrasts against the stoic nature of the surrounding concrete floors and walls. There’s something subtly romantic with the way nature plays with the modest presence of the house. It’s welcoming, familiar, and serene. I could see myself tucking away here only emerging to invite friends to sit on the long lawn to enjoy the LA sunshine.
As always, thank you so much for taking the time to read my latest blog post. I’m so happy to share my experiences here especially for my EU friends who have yet to come visit.
About a year ago, I did an interview featuring Claire and her beautiful Spanish style apartment. Her eye for design paired with her patience to find the perfect vintage pieces caught my eye. Read her full interview here.
